This is a special list of videos which I have stumbled upon, and found particularly insipring. These films are embedded
on my website, and can be found if you touch on the title of the article. Remember the fragile nature of this kind of thing I'm doing. These videos could disappear from off the net at any time...
or the other website could go down for maintenance, and the page may thus appear to be broken. Such is the nature
of the internet. I'll try to keep on top of this. But please forgive me if you find one missing.
This innovative british string quartet plays Ravel's Bolero, using a single cello. It's quite an intriguing feat. The performers in this show are Giles, Ralph, Graham & Neal Broadbent... and their website can be found at http://stringfever.co.uk/.
This is a very beautiful interview with the president of Bolivia - Evo Morales. The interview was conducted by the Al Jazeera news network in march of 2008. They asked him many pertinent questions, and gave him the opportunity to explain the current situation with the new constitution, and the nationalization of natural resources, and other contextual issues, very clearly.
This is a documentary film which was made in the year 2001 - "Revolution OS" - in which all the great minds behind Linux are interviewed. Linux is going to be a very important replacement for Apple's OSX and Microsoft Windows at some future point in time. All the technicians are gravitating towards it, and so they are going to create a lot of cool stuff which will make it more desirable for people to use, then the auspices sold by Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. This may be a hard video for some folks to watch, because to understand it fully, you need quite a decent vocabulary of computer technical language. But anybody might like watching it, just to absorb the framework of ideas.
Bhutan is a country just east of Nepal. They have a central ethic that instead of measuring "gross domestic product" - they measure "gross domestic happiness." The king has given the green light for a democracy to be born... but most people are hesitant about the whole matter. One of the reasons given, is that political parties will create divisions among them.
This is a very interesting film, which is something of a litmus test about how progressive Denmark is, as compared to the usa. This kind of song would never be broadcast on television in the usa. The usa is too caught up in it's bitter rancor about longstanding cultural forms. In the usa, form is more important than substance, it seems. The look on the boy Fabian's face as he sings boldly about his love for his fathers is so refreshing. It's a living example of how that kind of domestic situation can work well for a child.
Copenhagen Denmark, and Bogota Columbia have built their cities to cater to bicyclists. The fabric of the society changes to where folks are more friendly to eachother. In the usa, a cyclist is ostensibly put in harm's way when she or he is riding the roads.
This 7 year old from Greensburg Kentucky is a pro pool player already. He is simply amazing.
This is a very brief interview by sattelite. Chrissy Gephardt is the daughter of Dick Gephardt, who was the house republican majority leader between 1989 and 1995. Ms. Gephardt jests that being the daughter of a politician isn't necessarily a good childhood, because you learn to be such an excellent bullshit artist. John also brings up the issue of how republicans treat the topic of lesbianism.
